Are We Willing to Listen?

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: Revelation 2:14

Do you like to be rebuked? I certainly don't like to be rebuked. However, rebukes handled properly can be very helpful in leading a person to repentance or to help someone who has strayed to get back on the right path.

When John penned the book of Revelation he carried messages of commendation as well as rebuke to the seven churches.

As I reflect on these Scriptures I have been asking myself if the Lord sent an angel to speak to me would he also commend me for some things but also say: "I have a few things against you."

During this season of Advent - while we wait to celebrate the birth announcement of Messiah - it is a good time to reflect on the impact knowing and believing in him should have on us as his disciples.

Some of the things I am asking myself:

  • Am I as appreciative of forgiveness as I was when the burden of my sin was first lifted?

  • Do I confess my sins and seek forgiveness quickly whenever I need to?

  • Have I delayed doing something God has asked me to do?

The reality is, disciples of Jesus never achieve perfection. As disappointing as this is on a personal level it is actually quite helpful in making new disciples. Our authentic testimonies of past mistakes, forgiveness, and current struggles are seen as authentic expressions of our humanity while also revealing the peace and life direction we enjoy as disciples.

Because we are human we probably need to be rebuked occasionally by our Lord. I am so thankful that when I need to be rebuked He is gentle and always steers me in the direction that is best for me.
