Happy Canada Day: From Sea to Sea

Happy Canada Day to Canadians everywhere.

Canada’s official motto is A Mari usque ad Mare, which translates as “From Sea to Sea.”

The phrase had its beginning during the process known as Confederation which transitioned several British colonies into what became the Dominion of Canada on July 1,1867. It was suggested by Samuel Tilley after prayer and his reading from the book of Psalms. Tilly and his colleagues established a new country and their prayer and desire was that God would have dominion over this new country from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. At the time of confederation the British colonies comprised the Eastern portion of the vast country bordering the Atlantic Ocean.

Four years after confederation when the most westerly territory, British Columbia, joined the Dominion of Canada the prophetic statement became a reality. The new nation then spanned the massive land mass from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Years later it came to include the Arctic Ocean as well.

Today is the 158th anniversary of the historic event establishing the Dominion of Canada and the desire that God would have dominion from sea to sea. Unfortunately, the percentage of people who are Jesus followers is in decline. In 2001, 77.1% of Canadians claimed to be Christians. As of 2021 the percentage had fallen to 53.2%.

Canada needs a visit by the Holy Spirit to revive God's people which will contagiously lead to an ingathering of new believers. While we pray and wait for divine visitation it is our desire to equip and prepare as many disciple-makers as possible and through them to invite as many people as possible to begin a journey that helps them find their place in God's great story.
