Not Many Should Become Teachers

Not many of you should become teachers, ... " James 3:1

My wife and I have often reflected on the amazing privilege we had as a young married couple to sit under the ministry of some very gifted bible teachers and preachers. These gifted communicators were instrumental in shaping our beliefs and equipping us to live as Jesus followers. Without a doubt these pastors had a significant role in the plan God had for us to transition from the business world to fulltime ministry. Their words inspired us to be Truth seekers and to apply the truth to our lives. We are forever grateful.

Preaching and teaching are essential gifts that are always needed in the church. The admonition to not teach, unless called to do so, is a good one because every preacher has to respond personally to the message to be preached before those who will listen to the finished product. Furthermore, responsibility for the care and nurture and spiritual growth of God's children is enormous. That is why our Scripture verse for today advises that only a few should become teachers of God's word.

Most people could never dream of being able to communicate like the people we listen to week by week in church or on line. Maybe this is the reason, in almost every church, there is a constant need for more teachers, and corresponding reluctance for most people to take up the challenge.

Fortunately, there is a role for everyone in discipleship. In discipleship we are looking for facilitators who are more like mentors and guides for the participants. This significantly reduces the stress of preparation and creates an atmosphere where everyone (even the facilitator) is on a journey to knowing Jesus better and learning how to disciple others.  With a resource that features leading by asking, learning by searching and growing by obeying, every Jesus follower can be trained to be a disciple-maker. And every disciple-maker will develop a passion to reach others who are not yet disciples of Jesus.
