When the World Chooses Death, Easter Still Whispers Hope

"The Great Gift of Easter is Hope" Basil C. Hume

Noelia Castillo, a 25-year-old woman from Spain fought a two-year court battle to end her life by being euthanized. Her life on earth ended on March 26, 2026.

Noelia struggled with mental health issues in her teen years but her life took a dramatic turn for the worse when she was gang raped in the institution where she was being treated. She dealt with her trauma by jumping out of the fifth floor of a building in an attempt to commit suicide. She did not die but ended up wheel chair bound, in constant pain.

Euthanasia has been legal in Spain since 2021. The panel of inquiry assigned to her case approved her application to be euthanized despite her young age and the fact that there may have been treatment available for her mental issues. Her father fought the ruling in the courts for two years. Ultimately the court ruled that Noelia could die if she wanted to and on March 26, 2026 Noelia died.

This story impacted me deeply because the culture of death in society stands in sharp contrast to the defeat of death and the culture of life we celebrate at Easter.

People like Noelia don't naturally assume the church will have answers for them. It may not even have occurred to her to reach out to a church or pastor for help. Her story motivates me to continue working toward training and releasing an army of disciple-makers in communities around the world.

The message of Easter is hope and a very effective way of spreading this message is through lay people who are trained and equipped and released to be disciple-makers. Through the work of disciple-makers every where we can reach some of the Noelia's of this world with an offer of hope despite living in a culture of death.
